Don Schaefer joined the 78th Fraser Highlanders in Montreal in the mid 1960’s. Upon moving to Toronto shortly thereafter, he started the regiment’s first of many outposts, York Garrison. In 1979 it was incorporated as a registered charity. Don was an accomplished businessman and highly respected, always the consummate gentleman. He was recognized for his extensive contributions to the 78th with the rank of Colonel. In fall 2021, Don was honoured with a ceremonial march past and salute for his loyal service to the Frasers over five decades. He passed away peacefully at Glynnwood Retirement Home, Thornhill (3 months short of his 100th birthday).
